PART 2 - EQUPMENT FOR A CHILD

Clothing

Clothing should be worn in layers so that the individual items can be easily  removed when it gets warm or put on if it gets cool. It’s important to remember to bring a waterproof, slightly oversize jacket to protect the child from the sun, rain, scratches and insects.

Some additional items are recommended: a wide brimmed hat with a built-in mosquito net, rain gear, and extra pair of socks as one pair will certainly get wet on any day. The clothing should be brightly colored so that the child can be easily seen on the track or in the woods.

Footwear

Sturdy, well fitting, and broken-in shoes are a must.  The footwear should be lightweight, offer good support and be comfortable.

Backpacks

To ensure the correct fit of the backpack, a good rule of thumb is that the weight children carry should not exceed 20% of their weight. Giving the child some responsibility by carrying an important item adds to a child’s enthusiasm for the adventure.
