The History of Recreational Camping
Recreational camping is a relatively new category of outdoor adventures which began around 1915 with the establishment of the National Park Service (“NPS”). These campgrounds consisted mainly of areas where the brush had been cleared so campers could hike to them. Once there, campers would erect their tent and collect water and firewood. Modern campgrounds have evolved to accommodate RVs that are ready to easily hookup to all the utilities, including cable TV and internet services.
Across this wide spectrum of campsites is the common search for a connection to nature and the soothing effects it provides. NPS manages over 100,000 campsites on federal public lands and it is estimated that more than 160,00 public campgrounds are managed within state parks. The public campgrounds tend to be designed more for “low tech” hiking campers. Privately-owned and managed campgrounds have become popular and allow less sophisticated adventurers to experience Mother Nature with resort-style amenities.
Regardless of where the camper fits on this wide spectrum the proper gear is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation. While planning your camping trip consider clothing, food, water, hygiene and safety provisions that you will need. Choose the gear that “fits” the level of accommodations that are available at your campground. Even the most modern campgrounds allow you to get closer to the beauty and calm of nature that we crave.
