WATER FILTERS

Even the most remote water source that is seemingly pure has a high probability of being contaminated.  The latest in water purification methods are filters that strain the water and remove microscopic contaminants without the use of chemicals.

The purity of the water depends upon the size of the pores in the filter.  It takes a pore size of 0.4 microns or lower to eliminate bacteria. There are many products available for purification of water. A description of how they work follows.

A self-contained water purifier is the most convenient. You fill the bottle with water, you squeeze the bottle, and the treated water comes out through the spout. Most of these bottles can be placed in the bottle attachment of your bicycle.  One filter can usually be used for approximately 200-500 gallons. There also water filters that you can use in your own bottles as well as filters equipped with their own spouts that can be used directly from the water source itself.

With use the filter clogs and it becomes more difficult to draw water. In some models you can clean the filter.

Three Stage Purification

Stage One:  Removes the sediment and blocks pathogenic cysts with a filter.

Stage Two:  Kills and disables water-borne microorganisms, including E. coli and Vibrio cholera bacteria, polio, hepatitis and other harmful viruses.

Stage Three: Captures much of the water’s un-wanted flavor and odors.
